Where to put the line.

In my newest work I am trying to find something that is a common thread such as a line, color, forms, symbols. For me this helps the series move forward.  My latest idea is to pursue the horizon.  But the dilemma is "Where to put the line?  I do not always want it to read as a pure horizon.  I guess that is my stepping off point.
